At-home Covid tests: Where to buy? How to choose which one if you’re allergic to a COVID-19 test and how to get it
The pandemic isn’t over. Regardless of how small your circle is, it’s still very possible to contract and spread Covid-19. You need to get tested frequently and wear a face mask in order to prevent this. There are free testing sites across the country, but those pressed for time can trade in the long lines for rapid at-home Covid tests, which can provide results in 15 minutes or so.
With hundreds of options, it’s tough to know which one to buy (if they’re even in stock). Below, we’ve rounded up options—based on FDA authorization and availability—to help make the search easier. There is now a way to order the third round of free tests from the US government. Members of our team have used some, but not all, of these tests.
Before the emergency declaration ends, Dr. Kates recommends that people stock up on free tests that may be available at a local library or a Covid testing center. After that, people with private insurance will probably have to pay full price for at-home Covid tests at drugstores.

Insurance companies are required to cover eight over-the-counter Covid-19 tests per month after January 15th of 2022. If a test is ordered for an underlying medical condition by a health care provider, there are no restrictions on the amount of the test.

Online Tests and Co-pays for Covid Vaccines from Abbot’s Binaxnow Kit, an Apparatus for Supplementary Testing
Within 15 minutes you can get the results from Abbot’s binaxnow kit, which includes a test card. You can use the companion app to report your results. A temporary digital pass will be given to those who test negative, and they can use it as proof of their test result. With two tests in each box, the company recommends taking another one no sooner than 24 hours but no later than 48 hours. The gear team has used this test. We cannot verify its level of accuracy, but it was straightforward to use, with clear instructions.
They may also have new co-pays for treatments like Paxlovid and for P.C.R. tests, even those ordered by their doctor, Dr. Kates said. She said that the co-pays will probably be comparable to the costs of drugs or tests the doctor recommends. Costs could vary from plan to plan, said Jose Francisco Figueroa, an assistant professor of health policy and management at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
People with private insurance will not have to pay anything for Covid vaccines, whether they are being vaccinated for the first time or are receiving booster shots, as long as they obtain them from an in-network provider, Dr. Kates said. She explained that the policy changes of theAffordable Care Act are to blame.
