The White House ordered a review after Austin was hospitalized

The White House needs to be aware of potential cases where they need to delegate authority, and that’s why Cabinet members must submit their current protocols in writing by Friday.

If the secretary has his power delegated again, he should inform the chairman of the Joint chiefs of Staff, the combatant commanders, service secretaries and chiefs of staff.

The Defense Department has ordered its own 30-day review of what happened and how its procedures should be changed if necessary. Kelly E Magsamen, Mr. Austin’s chief of staff, sent an order to the administration and management director to evaluate the processes and procedures through which they were carried out in this period.

The Pentagon’s Defense Secretary was hospitalized on New Year’s Day after he had a procedure to remove a benign mass from his prostratetum. The White House said President Biden was only told of Austin’s diagnosis Tuesday morning.

The White House was not aware that Austin was under general anesthesia during the procedure. He recovered from his surgery and returned home the next morning, the statement said, adding: “His prostate cancer was detected early, and his prognosis is excellent.”

Austin said in a statement released Saturday evening said he knows he could “have done a better job ensuring the public was appropriately informed. I will do better. But this is important to say: this was my medical procedure, and I take full responsibility for my decisions about disclosure.”

The secrecy surrounding Austin’s hospitalization prompted the White House to take a hard look at rules for Cabinet members, according to a memo obtained by NPR.

Kirby said that Biden retains confidence in Austin, but acknowledged that it is not optimal for the situation to go on for as long as it did without the commander in chief knowing. That’s not the way this is supposed to happen.”

“Changes in his laboratory evaluation in early December 2023 identified prostate cancer which required treatment,” the statement said. He underwent a surgical procedure called a Prostatectomy at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center after consultation with his medical team.

A prostatectomy is the surgical removal of the prostate gland. Sometimes it’s done minimally in a way that uses a robot to help perform the operation more precisely. Despite Walter Reed stating that Austin needed treatment, the Pentagon has continued to call the procedure “elective”.

Austin was moved to the intensive care unit the next day, where he was found to have abdominal fluid in his body that impaired the function of his small intestines.

“I’m glad he’s getting it addressed. I wish he had been more forthcoming about it. He’s in a good position and his transparency is important. And … we didn’t see that. The national security interests of the country are at risk and that raises a lot of questions about his position.
