The case of James Brennand, the teen who shot him in the parking lot of Mcdonald’s is still in critical condition
The police officer who shot the teenager while he was in the parking lot of Mcdonald’s has been named, as the teen is still in critical condition.
The police department in San Antonio claimed James Brennand had seven months of experience, but he was fired for violating agency tactics and training.
Brennand shot Erik Cantu who was still reported to be in critical condition on Saturday and is “literally fighting for his life,” his defense attorney, Brian Powers, told CNN on behalf of the teen’s family. Cantu was initially charged with evading detention in a vehicle and assaulting the officer, who had claimed he was struck by the door of the car as the teen backed up.
“Once SAPD completes its investigation into the actions of former Officer James Brennand and submits the case to our office, our Civil Rights Division will fully review the filing. As we do with all officer-involved shootings that result in death or serious injury, we will submit the case to a Grand Jury for their consideration. We can’t make any further comment until that happens.
Powers told CNN the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office notified him on Friday prosecutors would not be moving forward with charges against his client. CNN was told by the district attorney’s office that there were no charges left to prosecute and the case had been closed.

The Moments Before a Stabbing Death of a Double-Amputee Man in Huntington Park, California: A 911 911 Call
“We need all the blessings we can receive at this time. We would like to ask for privacy beyond the update as this is a delicate moment in our lives, and we are focused on getting him home.
“Let me be clear that I believe that the large majority of members of the San Antonio police department do an excellent job at protecting our community and doing the right thing,” Gonzales said during the conference.
The officer who was handling an unrelated call at the McDonald’s on Sunday night saw a car that he thought had evaded police the previous day, and called for backup.
Before backup officers arrived, body camera video released by police shows the officer walk up to the driver’s side of the car, open the door, and order the driver out. The visibly startled teen, who was in the driver’s seat eating, put the car in reverse and started backing up.
Brennand then opened fire five times on the car, according to the video. As the driver shifted the vehicle to move forward, body camera video showed the officer opening fire an additional five times as the car drove away.
Videos purportedly capturing the moments before the shooting death of a double-amputee man confined to a wheelchair are raising questions about whether police used excessive force in the Southern California city of Huntington Park.
The police department said that on Thursday afternoon officers responded to a report of a stabbing. Responding officers found a victim suffering from “a life-threatening stab wound resulting in a collapsed lung and internal bleeding,” the statement said.
The victim said that the man in the wheelchair had stabbed him in the chest without provocation, and he then fled the scene in his wheelchair.
During their search, police found the alleged suspect a few blocks away holding a 12-inch butcher knife, HPPD said. The suspect allegedly ignored officer commands and threatened to “advance or throw the knife,” and officers used two separate Tasers to try and subdue the suspect but failed, HPPD said.
The suspect was killed in the upper torso by gunfire, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
The HPPD placed the officers on administrative leave while they conducted investigations, which included the sheriff’s department Homicide Bureau.
Anthony Lowe, a Los Angeles man killed in a wheelchair, and why the LAPD isn’t investigating officer-involved shootings
The family of the man who died identified him at a news conference as Anthony Lowe.
Bystander videos of the incident posted on social media appear to show the confrontation between police and Lowe on Thursday just before the shooting. The man in the video is Lowe, according to a family member.
Anthony Lowe had no legs and was killed in a wheelchair, his mother said at the news conference. They must do something about it, because I want justice for my son.
“There can be no justification for killing Anthony, and we’re here to stand with his family and his community to fight for justice for Anthony,” said Cliff Smith, an organizer with the Coalition for Community Control Over the Police.
Ebonique Simon, mother to one of Lowe’s children told CNN that Lowe was a loving father who liked to dance and was funny. She said he had been dealing with a lot of depression over the loss of his legs.
The California Attorney General’s office, which is required under state law to independently review officer-involved shootings in the state, told CNN that it is not investigating the matter “at this point in time.”
“We know that the Black community in Los Angeles is reeling and searching for answers. Nothing can heal the trauma the community is experiencing, and Los Angeles County deserves to know how and why these incidents have occurred.
