Legal experts say that Trump’s conviction won’t lead to a prison sentence

A jury found Trump guilty of 34 counts of felony fraud to try to win a presidential hush money payment to Stormy Daniels

The charges carry a sentence of anywhere from probation to up to four years in prison, but legal experts told NPR that it’s unlikely Trump will face incarceration.

According to Lauren-Brooke Eisen, a senior director at the nonprofit Brennan Center for Justice, it’s very unlikely for someone who has never been convicted of a crime to go to prison for their first offense.

The charges — for falsifying business records to conceal another crime — carry a maximum sentence of four years in prison, but Trump could receive much less serious punishment, like probation.

The jury found Trump guilty of all 34 counts. The jurors said they unanimously agreed Trump falsified those business records to conceal a hush money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels in order to influence the outcome of the 2016 election. Here are the details of those felony counts.

According to an election law expert, a felony conviction in another state makes a person ineligible to vote in Florida. The person would not be able to vote if they were convicted.

Eyder Peralta says despite the chance of a history being made, people on the streets are skeptical. Some say they expect politicians to be corrupt, no matter their gender. Elena Poniatowska, a 92-year-old feminist who credits hard work and feminist intent, said that Mexico’s first female president is no surprise.

Trump’s sentencing is scheduled for July 11, just four days before the start of the Republican National Convention, where he is set to become the official presidential nominee for the Republican Party.
