Gaza residents break into the UN warehouse in order to get supplies

The hospital where I lost a leg: the fate of a modern hospital on the precipice of war and the destruction of the hospital’s lights

We hope that people will read our story and share in our desires: for a cease-fire, for a full opening of border crossings so that the wounded and sick may leave and lifesaving supplies can reach the tired, hungry and the displaced. For a normal life of peace where hospitals in the region see Israeli and Palestinian patients side by side, unburdened by grief, separation and war. We need the world’s help to bring this violence to an end.

As I was about to amputate a girl who had lost her leg, my wife stepped into the hallway and hugged me. She said our home had been destroyed by an airstrike while I was in surgery. The hospital is where we live now. I close the door of my office at night and cry, away from my patients and family.

The hospital is on the precipice of true disaster as I write this. Despite intense efforts to ration fuel since the start of hostilities, we are still only able to run the electric generators on the last gallons of fuel. Most of the time, elevators are out and patients are not moving on their own. When the fuel runs out, we will no longer be able to function at night after the sun goes down. A lot of the hospital equipment that was needed to run modern hospitals will become useless in a few years. When the generators fall silent, we will be relegated to practicing medieval-level medicine. Without fuel, the hospital’s lights would go out permanently, and we could turn it into a mortuary.

The Gaza Strip is a City of Light: Israel is Breaking into the U.N. Warehouse for Supplies as Israeli Barrage Continues

The fighting in the north of the Gaza Strip continues, as we said this morning, we will do what we must to achieve goals of the war.

The al-Quds hospital in the Gaza Strip was warned by Israeli authorities to be immediately emptied, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent.

“Since this morning, there has been raids 50 meters away from the hospital,” it added in a statement on Facebook. The claims were not commented on by Israel.

Colonel Elad Goren of the Cogat, the Israel Ministry of Defence agency that coordinates with the Palestinians, said they were increasing the amount of assistance headed for Gaza from Egypt.

Benjamin Netanyahu had to remove a statement he had made that he didn’t know about the attack.

The Gaza Strip was the scene of intense Israeli raids. The Israel Defense Forces said that it had hit more than 450 terror targets during the past day. An officer of the Israel Defense Force was gravely injured by a mortar shell in the Gaza Strip.

After three weeks of war and a tight blockade on Gaza, this is a worrying sign that civil order is beginning to break down.
